Today is Friday, 13. And not only that, it is also a full moon tonight. This will only happen in 2049. Interesting fact, but not as interesting as an article I just read.
A 1 year study was done using a number of obese men and woman. Half of them went on a traditional low-fat diet, while the others went on an LCHF diet. After three months, the LCHF group lost a lot more on average than the low-fat group, and on 6 months they had the same findings. On the 1 year mark, however, the two groups were very close in average weight loss. So, low-fat diets do work if you stick to it for a very long time.
However, another very interesting fact came out. While attrition did happen in both groups, more people who was on the LCHF diet were still there at the end, while most of the traditional low-fat group left the study. So, why did this happen? It is simple. The low-fat diet is basically a starvation diet. You feel miserable and hungry the whole time you are on it, while the LCHF group rarely felt hungry or the need to snack.
Blood tests done on both groups showed little variance on things like cholesterol levels between the two groups, showing the high fat diet had no negative impact over the period.
Something they do not say, however, is how much actual fat was lost between the groups, and how much muscle. I believe the results evened out after a year because the LCHF group did not lose muscle, and muscle weights more than fat, while the low-fat group lost a lot of muscle with the fat they lost. I have no prove of this, though, it is only a personal thought.
So, after thirteen days on this new diet, how do I feel? I feel incredible. I have never lasted this long on a diet without cheating, and a lot of times I did not even last this long totally before dropping the whole thing.
What do I miss of my previous diet? Actually, nothing yet. I thought I would crave chips and potatoes in general, but I don't. It might be because of my mindset, but it may also be because I am never hungry, and when I do eat I eat food I enjoy. For the first time I don't think to myself That will taste so good right now when I see a pizza or junk food add on TV. I just love this new lifestyle!
